On October 10, the Second Namcha Barwa Forum on building a national ecological civilization highland in Xizang was held in Nyingchi, Xizang, under the theme “Technology Empowerment, Green Plateau — Wisdom Leading the Development of a National Ecological Civilization Highland.”

Against the real-world challenges posed by global climate change, the forum focused on pressing issues such as safeguarding ecological security on the plateau, science-based disaster prevention and mitigation, and coordinated regional governance. Participants reviewed the achievements of ecological civilization development in Xizang, explored measures for plateau ecological conservation and risk prevention and mitigation, and discussed practical pathways for building a national ecological civilization highland.

At the forum, Yao Tandong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and team leader of the Second Comprehensive Scientific Expedition on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, delivered a keynote presentation. He shared in-depth insights on the significance of ecological conservation on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, new understanding of environmental transitions gained through the Second Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research, and strategic considerations regarding scientific expedition tasks for building a national ecological civilization highland on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau under new circumstances.

The main plenary session of this year’s forum focused on “Responding Scientifically to Climate Change to Support Ecological Conservation on the Plateau, and Applying Science and Technology to Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to Promote Livable Development on the Plateau.” Participants, including academicians, experts, and scholars from across China, gathered in Nyingchi to pool their expertise and contribute ideas for building a national ecological civilization highland on the plateau.
