On March 12 this year, China's National People’s Congress adopted the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, which came into force on July 1, 2026. On April 30, the European Parliament adopted a resolution, which disregards facts and legal principles, maliciously smears China’s laws and ethnic policies, and grossly interferes in China’s internal affairs. In response, China expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition and has lodged solemn representations with the European side. What is the European Parliament’s real intention behind this move? What are the motives driving it? Liang Junyan, a researcher at the Institute of History, China Tibetology Research Center, said that China has found a path of ethnic affairs governance that differs from that of Western countries while proving effective in practice. The European Parliament’s attacks are, in essence, a projection of its anxiety over the success of China’s development path.
