"The Snowy Mountains and the Earth" Captivates Beijing Audiences

2026-09-09  | China Tibet Online

From September 2 to 4, the large-scale original dance drama The Snowy Mountains and the Earth, a key production of the 7th National Ethnic Minority Art Festival, was staged in Beijing, allowing audiences in the capital to experience the profound changes on the grasslands of Golog in Qinghai and the warmth and strength of ethnic unity.

Adapted from Yang Zhijun’s novel of the same title, which won the Mao Dun Literature Prize, the production focuses on the dedication and perseverance of those who worked in support of Qinghai, recreating the sweeping transformation of the plateau from poverty alleviation to revitalization. It celebrates the commitment and dedication of officials who came to support Qinghai, as well as the bonds of ethnic friendship built through working side by side. The entire dance drama has no spoken lines. Instead, through subtle body movements, richly layered music and evocative stage design, it gradually unfolds a vivid picture of the lives of plateau herders, from nomadic migration to settling down and building better lives. Tender and moving in its emotional moments, it is stirring and powerful in its more impassioned scenes.
