Located in Yining, Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Liuxing Street features a unique hexagonal layout designed by German engineer and built in the mid-1930s. The street took its name, Liuxing, meaning hexagon, just from this distinctive layout.

The street is the heart of Yining and also an important historical and cultural district of Xinjiang. It is home to residents from 13 ethnic groups, including the Han, Uyghur, Kazak, Hui, Russian and Tatar—a diversity that has endowed it with rich cultural resources born of the convergence of different cultures.
